My theory: The Hillary campaign had to know about it on some level back then, but thought that Edwards in the race was an asset to them. They probably figured she'd get the voters wanting change, he'd the Dems looking for a traditional looking candidate, then Obama would be out cold. They figured they could go toe-to-toe with Edwards once Obama was out. After all, Edwards was on the Kerry ticket, tons of stuff to go after there! So now that it's all over, they had do get one more sting in before they went off and died. The Clintonites are having a HARD time embracing Obama, as evident by her statements about letting her supporters be heard at the convention. This little stab is another way of getting her minions riled up before the big show.
I am not sure about this. I would think Hillary would have wanted this information out early, as she seems to have a reputation of doing anything to do away with a rival.
